Artnom
Seoul, South Korea, b. 1971
Biography
ARTNOM studied Korean painting in college and worked at a character design company for a few years. ARTNOM’s work began by finding the connection between Korean painting and character. The folk painting that ARTNOM used as motive is a drawing that contains the hope of commoners during the Chosun dynasty. During that time, folk paintings were practical artworks that had a clear usage in people’s lives. They would attach them on the front gate on New Years, give them as gifts, or have weddings in front of folding screens that have folk paintings drawn on it. They depict the lives and philosophy of people during that time most accurately because they were intimately involved in the lives of the commoners. Also, artists who drew folk paintings did not leave any marks on their drawings. Because of that, they were able to not confine themselves in a specific form and use their imagination.
