Hyunkyoung Shin
Gimpo, South Korea, b. 1960
Biography
In Hyunkyoung Shin's work, which fills the screen with countless dashed lines, one can detect a psychological phenomenon of 'repetition compulsion'. The lines that repeatedly break and reemerge are a repetition of presence and absence. Similar to Freud's concept of the infant's "fort-da game", the act of actively adjusting presence and absence brings pleasure and alleviates anxiety. Rather than remembering repressed desires or impulses as things of the past, the artist seeks to constantly evoke and experience them in the present through repetition.
